New Hotel Opening in Seychelles
In recent years, there has been a surge in new hotel openings, yet one country has effectively managed this growth, maintaining a steady and focused approach in a niche market. This strategy has preserved the destination's exclusivity, attracting global guests seeking an unspoiled paradise or a serene retreat after an East African safari – Seychelles stands out as an excellent choice. Among the less explored tropical islands lies Platte Island, situated 130 kilometres south of Seychelles' main island, Mahé, and 140 kilometres from the capital, Victoria.
Discovered in 1769 for its low topography, Platte Island, also known as "ill Plate," gained significance in the 1840s when guano excavation for fertilizer became profitable. A visitor in 1905 noted the island's flourishing coconut plantation, a stark contrast to its less productive past. Initially considered for a leprosy isolation camp in 1828, Platte Island served as a quarantine station for visiting ships in 1838, though challenges arose due to its distance and environmental constraints.
The island is just 1300 metres from north to south in length and a height of merely 3 meters above sea level, Platte Island boasts a unique ecosystem. The surrounding coral reefs create a pseudo-atoll, featuring smooth lagoons and safe landing spots, except for tricky passages on the northwest side.
Platte Island is renowned for its rich fish life and diverse bird population. While some species have become extinct, others, such as the brown noddy and white-tailed tropicbird, continue to thrive. The island also hosts a significant annual nesting population of hawksbill sea turtles.
